Testimonials

We prefer to let your future colleagues tell you about their experiences for themselves. To give you a real taste of life at Loyens & Loeff. It will also give you a good idea of the kind of schedule to expect.

Steven Callens

Testimonial “I specialize in Mergers & Acquisitions, partnership law and general corporate law. Every once in a while I also answer questions about international private law. When I joined Loyens & Loeff I was struck immediately by the direct and open nature of the communication. There is no room for ivory towers and private domains here. Teamwork is the message, also internationally. I spoke recently at a Loyens Study Day, a day with lots of workshops with colleagues from the Netherlands and Luxembourg also taking part. Things are pretty informal during Study Days but because the sessions are interactive, it does require an effort. Also the fact that young starters are immediately involved in cases and are in contact with clients is an advantage in my view. Initiative and independence are appreciated. As a mentor I experience up close and personal just how stimulating these starters can be. At the same time, on-the-job training is one of the best ways to rapid development.”

A Wednesday in the life of Steven Callens, Associate

7:00 a.m. I get up and have breakfast.

7:45 a.m. I drive from Ghent to Brussels.

9:15 a.m. At the office at last. A quick coffee before I start. I complete two contracts, transfer a case to a colleague and brief him. I also take a telephone call from a potential client asking whether we can provide legal/tax support in setting up Belgian-Dutch joint venture structures. Of course we can …

12:15 p.m. I go to the cafeteria for a soup and a sandwich and read the paper and check my e-mails while I eat.

1:00 p.m. Telephone call with a client to discuss a draft contract that I had forwarded the previous week. After the call I give instructions to a colleague to make the necessary changes and forward the updated draft. I then start drawing up a consultancy contract for an English client who is in the process of taking over a Belgian company.

7:00 p.m. Time to quickly deal with the most urgent matters.

7:30 p.m. I switch off my computer. The end of my working day.
